Exploring Explosions

Some of the most amazing events are only truly understood when viewed in very slow motion. The MythBusters use high speed cameras to record and slow down phenomena too fast for the naked eye. That could be anything from colliding cars to a slap in the face to a fantastic explosion.

When you see an explosion on an episode of MythBusters, the image moves at 25 frames a second (the average rate for television). That means you are seeing 25 individual images played sequentially at a high speed, creating movement that we see as video. Slowing the rate at which the frames appear will make the images move in slow motion.

The more frames you have, the slower and more detailed the video will appear. High speed cameras can film up to a quarter of a million frames per second! Unlike standard cameras that use a shutter to capture images, these cameras achieve tremendous speeds by running the film over a rotating prism or mirror. Using this technique one can stretch one second of explosion to more than ten highly-detailed minutes.
